"Drink Me" potion

When I began planning my tea party table and was thinking of all the things I associated with Alice in Wonderland, the 'drink me' potion was right up there on the list! Although Alice did not find the magical shrinking potion at the tea party she did remark that it had a wonderful flavour which was a mixture of cherry tart, custard, pineapple, roast turkey, toffee and hot buttered toast! How yummy!

Alice first found the potion after falling down the rabbit hole when she chased after the White Rabbit and found herself in a room with no way out apart from through a tiny little door.  When Alice drank the strange potion she shrunk to ten inches high and was able to go into the beautiful garden which was on the other side of the door.

The potion bottle is made of fine artisan made glass with a blue liquid inside and a tiny "drink me" label tied around the neck.

Profiterole tower

Could you imagine a tea party with a gigantic tower of fresh cream filled profiteroles and smothered in rich milk and dark chocolate sauce? Yes, I'd want to be there too!

Rocky Road bars

Rocky Road (also known as chocolate tiffin or chocolate fridge cake) is a no bake chocolate snack bar made with melted chocolate, golden syrup and a little bit of butter mixed together with ingredients such as dried fruit, biscuits and nuts.

My  Rocky Road bars have little pieces of pistachio nuts (green) marshmallows (pink and white) and digestive biscuits (beige) inside.  I made a slab of my tiffin mixture and cut into eight squared pieces so it looked like it had been poured and set inside a deep tray (as you would do if you had made this in real life!) Mmmm delicious!

Cheshire Cat chocolate cupcakes

This is proof you never can have too many cupcakes at a tea party! These are Cheshire cat themed cupcakes which I have made using colours inspired by the cat's  striped pink and purple fur.  There are six chocolate cupcakes (each with magenta and purple paper cases) topped with dark chocolate ganache and boiled sweets and one with the Cheshire cat's face made from fondant.  All the cupcakes are fixed to a fluted glass serving plate.

Doughnuts

Also included at the Mad Hatter's tea party table are these delicious doughnuts with pink icing and rainbow sprinkles... So adorable and without any of the calories you'd find in a real doughnut!

Chocolate swirl pastries

I made these because well, what tea party is complete without Danish pastries? I absolutely love cinnamon swirl pastries and these are my inspiration for these chocolate swirl pastries.  I've never came across any with a chocolate filling before but they sure do look tasty.. I must look up a recipe for them!

"Painting The Roses Red" cake

Here is the first of a series of items from my Alice in Wonderland themed Mad Hatter's Tea Party table.  This is my "Painting The Roses Red" cake which was inspired by the scene where the playing cards paint the white roses red for fear of the Queen of Hearts chopping off their heads! I wanted a centrepiece for my tea party table which would draw the viewer's eye onto the table.  It needed to be a large cake and taller than any other items on the table so I designed a three tiered cake with green piped icing which had the appearance of a topiary rose bush.  I then added roses around the cake, half white and half red, and partially painted a few of the white roses with red acrylic.  I made the grinning Cheshire Cat on top of the cake to add some character and formed a black and white tiled floor style design around the base.

In my photographs of the complete table I have also added a Queen of Hearts playing card to the front of the cake which I love because it adds a bit of extra whimsy to the piece!

The 1:12 scale playing cards I have used in this miniature food table are from the Magic Pug shop on Etsy and these are the actual ones I used.

Happy 150th Birthday Alice!

This year marks 150 years since Lewis Carroll's book 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' was first published.  I have wanted to create a Mad Hatter's Tea Party scene for a while and thought of no better excuse than to make one in the year which marks the anniversary! Most of us will be familiar with the Disney version and also Tim Burton's reimagining of the story, but I wanted to create something a little bit different in my own style so here is my very own Alice in Wonderland inspired Mad Hatter's Tea Party table!
